Is a Chromebook with a minimum amount of Ram suitable for hosting a Hangout On Air?

Is a Chromebook with a minimum amount of Ram suitable for hosting a Hangout On Air?

The test will be conducted using an Acer C710 with 2GB of RAM.
We hope to test using 3 cameras:
C710 built in webcam
Logitech c525
Logitech c920

We also plan to test using ethernet and Wi-Fi to see if/how it affects the quality of the HOA.

Come Join Us!

Join us and find out!

For Comparative purposes I have added screen shots taken from my HP Chromebox (i7 chip 8GB RAM)

  2. Rayne Dowell Everything connects to a Chromebox via ports for (4)USB, (1) HDMI, (1)ethernet, or (1) display post.
As to image quality that depends greatly on what hardware the chromebox and chromebook are running. Since mine have VERY different specs I expect the images will be different also.

  3. Andrew Hatchett i'm interested in the ins and outs of it too. is yours wifi or carrier or both???

  4. richard clarkson I have both and use ethernet for my chomebox. The only time I used my chromebook was last Wednesday as a member in the filmstrip and forgot to plug the ethernet cable in but the Wi-Fi seemed to work ok.

  5. Bit of a bad time for UK. I will say 'Maybe' and try to stay awake.

  6. Sheila Strover,
Thanks.I know, and apologize; but I really didn't want to do it during US business hours. If this goes well I could later do one with a more European-friendly time frame.  :)

  7. In about 45 minutes I'll be sending invitations to those who responded "Yes" to join the event filmstrip.

If anyone else would like to join please let me know.

    Thanks

  11. While I was waiting for this test I watched this great Star Trek animation that Terry Leigh Britton shared - https://plus.google.com/106867567997804136918/posts/K6hPSYSinUR

  12. So what is your current upload speed, Andrew Hatchett ?

    ReplyDelete
  13. i'll watch it but i can't join it. wish i could

  14. Perhaps Michael Daniels can send you and Lon McClure a link to jump in richard clarkson ? They want to test how much it can take.

  15. On wifi
    66.2 download
    11.7 upload
    Pretty good!

  16. I had 10 in the filmstrip on my Acer C720 the other day (hosted by me). On ethernet. YouTube live event. Sheila and Michael were in the green room that day.

  17. Lon needs to mute the show in the other tab cos there is an echo.

  18. It is the WebRTC that makes the Chromebook so efficient with HOAs

    ReplyDelete
  19. my wifi upload is always .65. the stupid isp doesn't have anything higher than 1mbps upload.

  20. Is that the wifi speed or wired richard clarkson ?

    ReplyDelete
  21. oops i made a mistake. it's my wired  computer . my bad lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's tough if you have less than 1mB upload wired, but the WebRTC on the Chromebook will still make even that speed relatively efficient.

  23. My Acer C720 with 2GB RAM was £199 sterling ($300) 9 months ago.  Guess they are cheaper in USA. Best to go for 4 GB RAM now, though.

  24. Also go for a 13" screen if you can...

    ReplyDelete
  25. It has no ethernet slot, but I use a usb to ethernet connector which cost a couple of dollars

  26. ACER  CB5-311 Chromebook does NOT have the ethernet connector.  Only disappointing thing about it, so far!

  28. Thank you Michael Daniels ! One last word before I vanish completely - Gerwin Sturm of Comment Tracker fame recommended a Chromebook extension called Screencastify for screencasting - it is really amazingly easy to use and so useful for making educational material from your computer monitor. Available from the Chrome Web Store.

  30. My thanks to Michael Daniels , Sheila Strover , Sheila Hensley , Lon McClure , richard clarkson , and Russ Worthington for their participation in this test.

  31. Michael Daniels thanks for the link.  What's the correlation to up/down vs Outbound/inbound, please sir.  I'll send a PM with a screenshot for clarity.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sheila Hensley I'm pretty sure Up=Outbound and Down=Inbound.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Andrew Hatchett I was thinking the other way around. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sheila Hensley - download speed is almost invariably MUCH faster than upload speed, so you should be able to work out which is which by checking that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sheila Strover  Yes ma'am, can guess that way.  What I want, really, is for Google to use the same term(s) unless it means something completely different. Just making sure.

  36. After our conversation about up/down Internet speed, I contacted Time Warner and stopped my Cable TV service (which I rarely used - I'm lucky to get many stations over-the-air) and upped my Internet bandwidth and it's going to be less $$ than the Standard Internet I had previously. Going from 15Mbps/.5Mbps to 50Mbps/5Mbps. Can't wait to try is out! Hoping the new plan is in effect when I get home tonight. Thanks for bringing up Internet speed in the discussion last night.

  37. Another thing to watch Lon McClure are the extensions, because you need to keep them to a minimum for HOAs. I have an interesting app called 'Context' (Chrome Web Store), that allows you to put the apps into different groups or contexts, and then just call up the ones you need, while the rest disable themselves for that context. Again that is on the Chromebook....

    ReplyDelete
  38. That sounds like a great little app for Chromebook Sheila Strover

    ReplyDelete
  39. Also available for Chrome browser. Now to figure out which extensions to have active for Hangouts context. Thanks, Sheila Strover

    ReplyDelete
  40. Lon McClure Only the ones you actually need during the hangout.  :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Enjoyed the hangout last night and learned a few things.  My 2 cents: One thing available with Chromebooks from Google is 1TB of cloud storage free for 2YRs so no need to add any external drives.  Most Chromebooks come with either a 16 or 32 GB solid state drive built in.  No internal moving parts and long battery time.  Sheila Strover thanks for the tip on the USB to Ethernet converter. My CB has USB 3.0 so ordered the faster one from Amazon.  That and a Bluetooth 4.0 mouse and I'm set.  Sorry for long post.  Thanks again Andrew Hatchett for the test.

  42. Rayne Dowell Here are the details on my ChromeBox. ... then just add a wireless keyboard & mouse,  Logitech C920 and an HP24"IPS monitor.

  43. Rayne Dowell I try to use my ChromeBox when I know I'll be recording. I use my windows tower with Chrome browser when I know I'll need files on it that I haven't got into Google Drive yet and thus aren't available to my ChromeBox. Except for the test to see if it would work I only use my ChromeBook for watching NetFlix in bed.  :)
