This is a link to an unlisted 1st draft video explaining what I meant about using the Zoom Meeting to mimic a Zoom Webinar

https://youtu.be/EY_844_05qc

It needs a LOT of work but I think it conveys the basics of what I was trying to say. At this point , you are the only one with the link . I'd be interested in your thoughts.

  1. Thanks, Andrew. I'll have a look at it later this morning and let you know.

  2. Hey Andrew Hatchett-I watched your video. Thanks for your ideas on this. Here is what I think:

    1) I had thought about using OBS and had downloaded and tried it earlier this year. It is superior to X-Split and open source. I like it a lot. When I watched Michael and you on his video the other day I kind of figured you were doing that with OBS along with the Zoom interface. This is certainly a viable work around but it won't really work for my webcast. OBS takes a lot of attention during a broadcast. You can often see Michael fumbling around to get things to work. I just don't like having the host wasting time with technical stuff while folks are watching live and start wondering what the heck I'm doing;^) I also am trying to read my script, watch the chat and listen to my guest as I conduct an interview. It just ain't gonna work for one person (host). I must be able to share controls so someone can spotlight the speaker or slideshow during the webcast. I have trained panelists engaged in this now.

    2) As for Zoom itself I can't thank the "Gray Warrior" enough for bringing this product to my attention. I don't know if I will eventually bite the bullet and buy the webinar package but I might. In the meantime I can use it for other things and learn the system. I started getting sponsors for my show this year so I can afford to do this but I need to decide if it is a big enough priority. I totally agree with you that the pricing structure is more than fair and it is an amazing product with great support. If Google decides to pull the plug on HOAs I'll have to have a plan ready to go.

    3) I think you and Michael discussed the fact that lower 3rds are not available in Zoom. That is not a deal breaker for me but I would sure like to have them. They only work half the time in HOAs now anyway. Most all other features on Zoom are clearly better or don't exist in HOA.

    4) One question I do have for you Andrew-Can you broadcast only the speaker's video without the filmstrip as you can with the Cameraman app on HOA?

Thanks again for all the hard work and evals you do. I watch and take to heart what you work on and appreciate your efforts. Let me know if I can be of assistance to you anytime for trying stuff out, etc.

    Thanks for the detailed reply!

1).I'll grant that in your particular usecase Zoom and OBS might not be a viable solution. There might be a partial solution with using the Co-Host feature in Zoom although we have never really tested it fully.

    2) Congrats on the sponsors!!
With the interest in Zoom I'm considering doing a weekly Show starting sometime after the first of the year "This week in Zoom' or something like that.

3 )I'd also like to have Lower Thirds. I've sent Zoom a "suggestion" for a future feature and urge others to do so as well ... I somehow feel they might get acted on sooner than Google's "FeedBack"

Right now, other than branding on a green screen, all I can recommend is the re-name feature.
    ;)

    4) I'm not sure if you can broadcast only the speaker's video without the filmstrip - but I intend to find out :)

I may put together a semi-formal "Zoomers" group for a bit of deep diving into it to go along with the show after the first of the year - I'll keep you in the loop about that.

    Thanks again,
    Andy

  4. Andrew Hatchett thanks for the reply. I'll also look into the co-host deal. I'd sure watch your Zoom show and participate in any group if you'd like. Keep me posted. Happy Thanksgiving, Andrew!

  5. Hi Gary...
Michael told me you can broadcast only the speaker's video if you are sending the Zoom thru OBS and broadcasting. Haven't found out about it using Zoom by itself yet.

  6. Andrew Hatchett yes, I watched his Pixel TC video last night and noticed he was able to do this. I also noticed that he has trouble with making sure the audio from his guest gets out. I think he had the same issue when he was doing your video the other day. This might be an example of what I was worried about. That is: one person managing so many things with OBS. His virtual background wasn't working well either as his head and teeth were turning gray! None of this to criticize Michael who does a great job. Just to point out some pitfalls that might need to be worked on.

    Have a great Thanksgiving, Andrew!

I agree that, depending on how much you are trying to do, a 2nd person is needed most of the times.

Michael likes to play and, imho, tends to ;overproduce' at times - especially when it is a new "toy".
    :)

A Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
